As pickleball surges in popularity, so too do injuries associated with the sport, & one of the most common is a wrist fracture. While pickleball is often seen as a low-impact game suitable for all ages, the combination of fast-paced play & sudden movements has led to a notable increase in wrist injuries.

How Wrist Fractures Happen

Most wrist fractures in pickleball occur when a player falls & instinctively extends a hand to break the fall. This puts direct force on the wrist, often leading to a break in the distal radius, the most common type of wrist fracture. Slippery courts, improper footwear, or loss of balance during rapid movements contribute to these accidents.

Players over 50 are particularly at risk due to bone density loss, which makes bones more susceptible to breaks even from relatively minor falls.

Prevention Tips

To reduce the risk of wrist fractures while playing pickleball:

  • Wear proper footwear with good grip to prevent slipping.
  • Practice balance & agility training to stay stable during fast movements.
  • Ensure the court surface is clean, dry, & free of hazards.

If you have sustained a fall and suspect that you may have a wrist fracture time is of the essence.
