Dr. Fernandez’s interest in medicine and compassion to connect with patients began while watching her father’s struggle with a malignant brain tumor. “I was only 13 years old when my dad passed away, however through his experiences he gifted me with the strength and endurance to become the physician I wish he would have been able to have”, stated Dr. Fernandez. In addition to her personal experiences, her career as a gymnast helped pave the way to her future as an orthopedic surgeon. “As a former collegiate athlete, I believe I can relate to my patients, as I too have had many injuries and setbacks during my athletic career,” says Dr. Fernandez. She recognizes that each patient has distinct goals and functional demands, and offers individualized treatment plans for her patients.

Dr. Fernandez performs a variety of procedures to treat a spectrum of injuries, from acute trauma such as bone fractures, to elective procedures such as hand rejuvenation. “The anatomy of the hand, wrist and elbow is fascinating and challenging,” says Dr. Fernandez. Her surgical armamentarium includes, but is not limited to, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, tendon and nerve repair, small joint replacement, and wrist/forearm/elbow/hand fractures.

“Being a surgeon is a humbling experience. I recognize that patients are scared and in pain when they see me, yet entrust their well-being to me in a matter of minutes,” says Dr. Fernandez. She admits that her approach to patient care involves educating the patients and providing them with the necessary tools to help guide their treatment plan. “I find that if patients understand why something is done, or why restrictions have been placed on their activity then they will be more compliant with their care and take an active role in returning to their baseline functioning,” says Dr. Fernandez.
